External funding success can take time, and it’s common to submit a proposal more than once before it’s funded. For example, the National Science Foundation reports that PIs submit an average of 2.3 proposals for every proposal NSF awards

How can RDO help you prepare to resubmit your proposal?

RDO provides support specifically catered to helping PIs craft the strongest possible resubmission. Together, we can:

  • Analyze the reviews you received to decide whether and how to respond, and prioritize updates
  • Ensure alignment with the goals of the original funding opportunity, or discuss alternative funding opportunities
  • Develop a timeline for proposal revisions and feedback
  • Advise on outreach to funding agency program officers for further guidance
  • Identify additional campus resources as needed to support revision and proposal improvement

PIs can schedule a resubmission planning meeting with us by emailing stanford_rdo@stanford.edu

  • For best results, RDO recommends scheduling a meeting a few weeks after receiving reviews and/or a meeting at least 10 weeks in advance of the sponsor deadline.
  • The submitted proposal and reviews should be shared with RDO at least one week ahead of the meeting date to ensure a robust discussion.

(Note: If applicable, PIs in the Schools of Engineering and Medicine will be referred to research development services from Engineering Research Administration and the School of Medicine Proposal Development Office, respectively. See FAQs for more details.)
