Research Security Team

Who We Are

As a leading research university, Stanford plays an important role in safeguarding research while continuing to advance universal scientific values of reciprocity, objectivity and fairness and maintaining an open and welcoming environment. The Stanford Research Security Team serves as a central resource for research security requirements and policies, including export control compliance, the Global Engagement Review Program (GERP), and Stanford’s Research Security Program.

Engagement and collaboration with international partners is essential to the university’s goals of advancing the knowledge and innovations required to address some of the world’s most pressing problems. In the vast majority of cases, the benefits of cross-border research collaborations are immense and the risks are low. However, the U.S. government has raised serious concerns about certain foreign governments attempting to exploit the openness of our research environment in ways that threaten U.S. national and economic security.

Services

The Research Security Team provides outreach and education, compliance programs, risk assessment tools, voluntary reviews and serves as a central resource for security requirements and policies.

  • Global Engagement Review Program - This program offers a fully voluntary advisory service to researchers and administrators seeking an evaluation of potential security risks around their research engagement. GERP is a three-tiered review process. Depending upon the complexity and impact of an engagement, the matter may be referred to the GERP Staff Committee or GERP Faculty Committee for review.  Under the program, researchers, staff, and administrators  can request a review and receive recommendations of ways to mitigate risk. Faculty, staff or administrators may request GERP review by contacting Jessa Alberston at jalbertson@stanford.edu.
  • Export Controls Compliance - We help Stanford researchers and staff comply with federal export control regulations by implementing Stanford’s export control policies and providing guidance, education and support around exports of technology, items and services to foreign persons in the U.S. and abroad. Contact exportcontrols@stanford.edu
  • Research Security - Our team offers guidance and support around federal policies aimed at protecting U.S. research from improper foreign interference. This includes new requirements to establish research security programs for individual projects and the university.
