Update on implications of government shutdown for federally-supported research at Stanford

Dear Colleagues,

As the federal government shutdown enters its fourth week, I write with updates and further guidance for researchers receiving or applying for federal grants.

The general guidance provided in my September 30 message stands: Work on existing grants may continue, but renewals and new notices of award are not being issued and amendments are not being approved.

Several funding agencies have issued more specific guidances, addressing additional topics such as submission of new proposals, progress reports, no-cost extension requests, and proposal review. The Office of Research Administration has created a website summarizing this information by agency. The website will continue to be updated as new information comes in.

These disruptions come on the heels of others we have experienced this year – and are unwelcome. But the key message for our community is that ongoing work should stay on track and most submission portals remain open.

Sincerely,
David Studdert
Vice Provost and Dean of Research
