Research Communication from VPDoR for Chairs and Directors - November 25, 2024
Dear Chairs and Directors,
Happy Thanksgiving week! I hope your fall quarter continues to be productive and invigorating. This month, I am sharing updates on the following topics:
- New CHIPS Design and Collaboration Semiconductor facility
- Welcoming new leadership to the Industrial Contracts Office
- Reminder: Free Travel Medicine Services in EH&S
CHIPS R&D Semiconductor Facility Announced for Bay Area
The National Center for the Advancement of Semiconductor Technology (Natcast), the nonprofit organization created to operate the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) under the federal CHIPS and Science Act, selected Sunnyvale, California as the location of its second flagship facility and as the headquarters for the NSTC and Natcast.
Stanford was centrally involved in the Bay Area’s bid to locate the CHIPS for America Design and Collaboration Facility (DCF) center nearby. Working closely with the University of California colleagues and the California Governor's Office, Philip Wong and Mark Horowitz (EE) helped craft a compelling case, highlighting Silicon Valley’s research strengths, talent base, and unmatched infrastructure. Our Senior Associate Dean, Serena Rao, provided outstanding strategic support and advice.
This flagship facility, a short drive from campus, is expected to drive significant research funding and operate as a convening hub for industry and academic leaders. Stanford and our UC partners are well-positioned to benefit from this center of advanced semiconductor R&D.
You may learn more about Natcast and this news on the organization’s website.
Welcome to New Leadership in the Industry Contracts Office
We are pleased to welcome Chris Haynes, as the new Director of Industry and Technology Transactions, leading the Industrial Contracts Office within the Office of Technology Licensing (OTL). Chris brings a track record of leadership and expertise from Sangamo Therapeutics, where he served as Senior Counsel and Senior Director of Licensing and Transactions. Reporting to Karin Immergluck, Associate Vice Provost of OTL, Chris will lead the university’s industry research and alliance contracting efforts.
We are also pleased to welcome Allan Kiang as the Senior Associate Director for Licensing and Strategic Transactions. Allan brings over 20 years of experience in complex transactions and IP strategy across diverse sectors (industry, startups, academia).
We look forward to Chris and Allan's contributions to advancing Stanford’s industry partnerships and innovation efforts.
