Implications of government shutdown for federally-supported research at Stanford

Dear Colleagues,

A federal government shutdown of unknown duration now looks imminent. If one occurs, we expect to receive guidance from each federal funding agency indicating what this means for researchers receiving support from that agency. Based on previous shutdowns, we anticipate the guidances will include the following:

  • Active federal awards: Research on existing grants should continue on its current trajectory. Stanford should be able to draw-down funds for these grants and contracts during any shutdown period.
  • New awards, renewals, and amendments: New notices of award and renewals will not be issued, and amendments will not be approved.
  • Submission of new proposals: Evaluation of new proposals will stop. However, if your submission deadline falls within the shutdown period and the agency’s electronic submission portal is open, proceed with submission.
  • Contact with agency staff: Most staff will be furloughed and unable to answer calls or emails.

SLAC faculty and affiliates will receive separate guidance and updates.

In sum, federal research activities on campus can largely continue during a federal shutdown. I will be back in touch with more information when we have it.

Sincerely,

David Studdert
Vice Provost and Dean of Research
